Not Web Site Help-It's the how YOU can help Page
In looking back on our life it was the times in life, love, family and pets (who count as family) when we lost something that you really had to take time out from daily routine and really look at how you live each day. Even if you lose them and get them back it is an opportunity in life for soul searching and re-evaluation. The famous "I coulda, I shoulda's." ;) But out of that process often came the most enriching personal perspectives of what you do and how much of that is focused on the parts of your life that effects others.
When you lose a pet you can often view it as something beyond your control. It may very well be. There are those who find their pets based solely upon personal luck & personal initiative. But often times the "Find" part is based upon the thoughful, selfless, intervention of strangers who take a moment to do something to help, the noting of posters, the noting of a loose family pet, the heads-up call to the owner. Many times it requires more. That's what this is about. It's about you and it's about helping. Click these shortcuts to avoid the life story stuff. ;)

3) About Offering to Help US !
It is rare for many people to see outside of their own lives. Here as much as it represents a loss, and we hope only a temporary one, don't squander the life opportunity that it presents.
If you have a family pet and you love them then they are part of your family. Seeing them running down the street dangling a broken chain in the glare of oncoming headlights is not something you will soon forget. The pit in your stomach, the moment frozen in time. It could be your child. For pet owners the feeling is the same.
Plan for the day that it will happen. Have your "PET HUNT" supplies all in one place where everyone knows where to get to them. Don't draw on them as you need a pen, or paper or a flashlight. Have them always ready. Prepare your pet with ID Tag or stitched collar with REWARD, Owner name & Phone # (See Security Tips ) We have Photo Wanted Posters all ready to go. You hope the day will never come but it is the reality of having a pet.
And for those of you who feel that animals were made to run free...THAT was in the days before the Valley was overrun by people and cars. In those days all that could happen was your dog could get run over by a horse or a rabbit. Now if it gets hit by a Mustang(TM) or a Rabbit (TM), it leaves tire marks...Please, a leashed romp HAS to make up for your pets lack of traffic safety and drivers courtesy. Many would run YOU over.....You think they are gonna stop for your dog or cat....Please...! ! Be Thoughtful..
2) Helping Yourself by Helping Others-
How ever your experience turns out. You will have received a bright flash of insight into just how much this can hurt. Maybe you are one of those more sensitive, aware kind of folks who are aware and concerned enough to think ahead. You have taken the time to come here. Maybe we can help in more ways then one.
Whether you find your pet or not and we of course hope that each and everyone of you does. The sad reality is there can be many days, weeks and sometimes even months of waiting. Sometimes you will never know. You can help by sharing your thoughts and feelings with others who are going through the same thing now. They will understand. You can offer tips and suggestions that maybe we or others have never thought about or have forgotten to use. Maybe you can be a sounding board for other peoples ideas and suggestions. It's like being a good neighbor when the Hudson Valley was little and small townish. When you cared about, said hello to and did little things to help your neighbor down the street. Well, we've tried to bring that community spirit, neighborly helpfulness back by giving you a place to help yourself by helping others.( See Hudson Valley Neighbors Forums for Lost Pets ) Its a place to talk, a place to share, a place to......help.
And realize that many people who have pets have them because they are the center of their lives. They are often like children for them. Many times people with pets are elderly, infirmed, hampered by illness or just inhibited by their personality so that they CAN'T go out there and talk to people or hunt through neighborhoods to get their pet back. We have met the sweetest, nicest and most interesting people doing this to help others. Sometimes, if you have free time, or don't and just want to do something different to start off your day with a good deed maybe you could post your willingness to help search an area on our Neighbors site.
Why Not ? People belong to clubs and do all kind of events just to stay busy. How about the satisfaction of actually helping someone get their pet back ? You worry about how your kids will grow up whether they will do the right thing. Never mind Karate Class get their butts out their helping other people. When they think they will need to use that Karate the people they helped might be there for them. Hmmmmm.... Interesting thought, huh ?
I can remember one time participating in a search and rescue effort for a little 5 year old lost boy near 9W down towards the river. We fanned out 6 feet apart and slogged through mud and briars, up hills, down valleys never knowing what if anything we would find. Eventually, he was found by one of the searchers, asleep and fine. WE didn't find him, one of the other searches did. We were grinning as much as the person who did find them though because you know what...we had helped. What a nice feeling. And that feeling has been repeated several times over with users of this site... We are glad we could help in some small way...Maybe you could offer to help them in others....Like the saying goes....You'll be glad you did.
3) About Offering to Help US !
We often get people saying that what we do is really neat and can we help you ? Well, first, we appreciate the offers. Thanks, It helps us just by you being supportive. We understand technology, we understand our limitations and we think or hope we understand some of the things that need to be done to decrease the chances of pets getting loose ( See Stop Loose Pets ) to increasing the chances of recovering them and getting them back home. ( We are working on some very neat ideas ) And, no we don't want your money, we really can't integrate a lot more people into our operation on this side...it's not conducive to that ...and that is the whole point about intelligent use of technology. I guess what helps most is 1) your patience and 2) your courtesy in realizing we are just trying to help and this is not our bread and butter. But thanks, the offers are appreciated BUT SEE # 2 Above OTHERS CAN USE YOUR OFFERS OF HELP ! ! Being overwhelmed is just an opportunity to be smarter and deploy better technology skills for us on a budget.
