           Death Row Pets

              And The Story Of Thor.........

Jump To Death Row HOT LIST....    Kelly Springer Spaniel Rescue

>

Lost Pet Alert came about because of our warm fuzzy desire to help people and to help pets be reunited with their loving owners. It was all about an upbeat, feel good, sense of positive accomplishment that we were happy to be an occasional part of. Somewhere in here, because of caring people we met we became aware of the plight of death row pets. As much as we were previously unaware and blissfully ignorant of what goes on with pets who sometimes are lost and sometimes end up in shelters we can no longer not feel compelled to do something to try to help.....This is Thor's story...It is repeated every day at Shelters across America...because of overcrowding and lack of space and resources.

              The Story of Thor

We got to meet Thor on Sunday...What a nice Dog. A big 2-1/2 year old Black Lab. He was so happy to be near people. If you petted him, he wagged his tail. If you talked to him, he wagged his tail. If you just let him stand next to you, preferably on your foot, he was content and happy to wag his tail.

What a happy dog. Thor, his name fits him well. He acts so in control and happy with his life. You would never know that Thor has been Thor for only a day and a half now. Do you think he knows.......?

If Thor isn't really his name He is keeping it a secret known only to him and the former humans in his life who either didn't notice him missing or are still waiting and hoping that they will open their door and Thor will be standing on the other side or maybe jumping back over the fence or walking through the barn door of his former farm in West Virginia if that was where  he lived. But you see the 5 days were up, the shelter was crowded with no more room at the pet inn and Thor is a big puppy at 70 pounds.

Before Friday...Thor didn't have a name....That was just something else to make it easier for him to face his fate on Saturday morning. You see Thor was scheduled to be Euthanized, That means... be killed, Saturday Morning.

His Crime...? Thor was guilty of escape and failure to maintain and present proper ID. We don't think his crimes could have included anything as serious as assault because EVERYBODY nearby got a look from those sad lab eyes, a lick if they were close enough and most definitely a tail wag. Even CAT's curled up or strutting nearby didn't even rate as much as a leash pull.

The breeze would every once in a while whip up scents from people and things to keep a young puppy busy paying attention to the things around him. Sniff sniff..Ohh a jogger...They got a wag... Neighbor pulled up..they got a wag.

His punishment....? Thor was to be executed Saturday morning...Maybe not at daybreak but whenever it came that day it is certain the darkness coming over his happy life would give him no more sunrises.

Saturday was a gorgeous day... Bright sunny vibrant with so much going on..The kind of day you live through and remember just because it was so nice.

           Do You think he knows...?

It's sad to think if not for Mira and others who did car relays to save Thor that Friday evening that I may never have met him, seen him wag his tail and be so happy to be around humans with no bothers or concerns at all. It all would have ended Saturday. There would have been no Sunday.

Thor had his death warrant cancelled for now by concerned caring people. He needs a home. A place with a barn or a fence or a big yard to run and play and enjoy being a puppy again...Do you think he knows...?

He is not the only one.........

If you have space in your heart to be loved trustingly and unconditionally maybe you could give Thor a home... Actually, Thor is at home no matter where he is. Maybe he'll let you share it with him....All You have to do is ask... He is big, about 70 pounds, still very much a puppy at 2-1/2 very loving, good with kids and cats. And ohhhhh...so happy to be alive...Even if he doesn't know...and he couldn't..You can tell by the loving trusting way he looks at all humans.

So if you want to spend the next 10-12 years with somebody who will worship you every day. Never say a mean word about you. Watch out for you. Contact us about adopting Thor.

Just remember on Friday's give him a special treat...It's his birthday.. It's a day that Mira and others gave him life.....

    Kelly - Death Row Pet

Kelly is a purebred Springer Spaniel with papers about 45 pounds. Owner wants to PTS (Euthanize) because of behavior problems. Owner will make available to rescue placement if adopted soon. Kelly is a spayed female about 3 1/2 Years old.

Kelly was the subject of serious prior abuse and was thrown up against the wall at chest height as a puppy by her prior owner in a fit of rage , about two years ago (former owner family member) when she was only one year old. Kelly had tinkled because she got excited and was glad to see him. Kelly may have lost some vision as a result of this attack and responds better to sound/voice recognition and has difficulty recognizing people at a distance visually.

Kelly is a very pretty dog and a very NICE dog...BUT, She has bitten certain members of owner family on the hands on three or four occasions. We have taken Kelly out of the owner family environment for a week at a time on two occasions without even a hint of a problem while in a foster home. We have NEVER had any behavior problem with Kelly while in a foster home. She is playful, smart, and loves and thrives on human attention.

Kelly can be the sweetest dog when outside of her current home. Kelly lives in a very high stress home environment. The owner family has had considerable ongoing stress factors that might be contributing to aggressive behavior. ( High Noise, family disputes, job/work stress, violent loud aggressive video games )

Due to the risk factors of prior abuse Kelly is not suggested for placement into a child environment. Kelly has aggressively attacked and bitten the hands of  15 year old owner family member in unknown circumstances. Kelly CAN NOT HANDLE STRESS. A kennel, shelter or veterinary run placement is TOO stressful for Kelly and she will get very defensive and will snap at or bite kennel/veterinary staff.  This dog needs a quiet low stress environment and a single or couple older adult family with no children and perhaps one other dog until she can be made to trust again. BEFORE, she was assaulted Kelly used to be fine with both neighbor children and owner children. Child placement is NOT recommended for Kelly at this time.

It is very possible that removal from her current high stress environment might go along way towards helping Kelly adjust and get over her fears. There can be no guarantees and you must be prepared to accept risk of attack, biting and aggressive behavior to place Kelly. Even though she seems fine now in a foster home environment.

It is important to know that Kelly has come a long way since she was assaulted two years ago. She would PREVIOUSLY charge anyone who raised their hand or went to pet her without warning. Strangers, particularly males, could not be brought into the room with her for fear of attack. She has adjusted and can now be petted and seems to have regained considerable human trust with work from and exposure to outsiders.

This had been her favorite human who had attacked and hurt her without warning.

This is a REAL nice dog. She is housebroken. She is both an inside and outside dog and is used to having property to run on. A small apartment would not be a good placement. Kelly did not have cats or other dogs so we don't know how well she would interact.

If you are interested send us an e-mail and we will put you on list or in contact with Animal Sanctuary.  ADOPTKELLY@LostPetAlert.Com  If accepted we can do trial placement and/or transition visits with Kelly.

This is dated 4/26/03 Time set by owner to adopt or Euthanize is 15 to 20 days while Owner is away. Toll Free Adopt Kelly HotLine is 1-(877) 213-5311  Placement includes adoption evaluation questions & release. 1) Thor, Black lab, 70 Lbs, Loves People, Kids, and even accepts CATS, Friendly, needs room to play. Puppy 2-1/2 Years old. No Known History. Happy to be alive. This is dated Monday 6/10/2002 11:20AM.

Update- 9/18/02 Thor is alive....He has been adopted and has a new friend with property to run on in Connecticut. Thor, we are happy for you. You were so nice. So worth saving. Such an enjoyer of life. But Thor is representative of many of those furry friends and former family members who are scheduled each day to die in shelters across America.

It was a close thing for Thor...he is alive today because other people like YOU cared and many others like YOU cared enough to make considerable efforts to save his life.

There are other Thors. But this one will live on always in our heart. He showed us with that warmth in his heart, and that joy in his tail and that sad look in his eyes why the killing has to stop. Because he had unconditional love to give. He just needed someone to give it TO. and that's not hardly a good reason to kill anything.......

Notice-  Give The Gift Of Life Through Good Manners !

Please,,,,Please ,,,This is really heartbreaking, but try to limit yourself to pets in or near the Hudson Valley of New York. We can't even often find homes for them. We are sorry. We wish we could do more but people are the problem and until somebody does something about them thousands of pets will continue to die needlessly.

Some Things you Should Know....

This is the saddest most heartbreaking thing that we have ever done on a regular basis.

Each American man, woman, and child would have to adopt 5 pets EACH to help make a dent in pet overcrowding in this country because of irresponsible pet owners who allow their pets to run loose without ID, not be neutered and bred for small sums of money and give pets to unqualified or irresponsible owners.

We have seen statistics that we believe to be reliable that over 5.79 MILLION loving furry potential friends and family members are KILLED each year in this country because they don't have homes, are given up by former family members, get loose, don't have proper ID, or end up in shelters without room or resources to maintain them.

You can save individual lives and make a difference or you can scream that society stop senseless killing by requiring pets be maintained by responsible owners, that they not be bred for profit, that shelter pets must be giving preference for adoption in each pet store and that all owners be required to neuter their pet in the absence of a breeders bond payment. Contact your local elected officials with YOUR opinions on what should be done.

Pets are and should stay family...Love them and don't leave them.

Do what you can to help make a difference..... Help stop the slaughter...

Thanks for Listening..... and We are sorry.....But, this REALLY does hurt,
