REWARD INFORMATION:
We offer rewards out of our own pocket as a
community service and because we are pet owners too. Hopefully, it may convince
someone who otherwise wouldn't be bothered to take that extra step of calling or
contacting us.
The point of the reward is to reunite the
pet with their owner or even in some circumstances to help the pet owner to find
out what happened to their pet and to bring closure.
We do not receive funds or grants from any
organization or person for the awards we offer. We do not ask the owner to
reimburse us for the reward if the pet is found or recovered. It is just our way
of doing something nice for the community and your pets. All lost pet
listing by LostPetAlert.Com are entirely free of charge. We do not ask for nor
do we want any money for our efforts.
Owners offers of awards, if made, are
the responsibility of the owner and not of lostpetalert.com. We will cite owners reward offers
if they are listed in your poster or information provided to us. This may be in addition to
our own reward offering.
Payment of lost pet awards finders
fees are all made through Paypal.Com a reputable online payment company. Reward
Payments are offered for pets reported missing on LostPetAlert.Com.
We reserve the right to 1) offer an
award or not, 2) decide if the pet's recovery was attributable to your
assistance & 3) the award offered is a single payment to a single person. If
however, you are ambitious and find multiple lost pet's in your neighborhood we
reserve the right to pay you the award for each pet you locate and reunite with
it's owner unless we think you are petnapping them. ;)
If you wish to support our efforts
then visit our sponsors and utilize their advertising and promotional services
for your home or property.
Always, if you have any suggestion on
how to make this free service more helpful, useful or functional please contact
us with your suggestion at Thoughts@LostPetAlert.com
BEFORE You have a Lost Pet...
Go get a camera and take a picture of your pet now before it gets lost. As
a matter of fact take a couple of pictures. Do one from the front (facial), one from the side,
one from the back close enough to show fur colors and markings. Your standard
escaping "bad dog" or "bad cat" mugshots. If you have one of
those computer or digital cameras you can take pictures that you can E-Mail to
Lost Pet Alert or readily put into Lost Pet Alert Wanted Posters.
Regularly inspect your pet's
chain, leash, collar for kinking, rust, fraying and other signs of weakness. It
may seem strong enough now but it's not going to get better on its own. Replace
it BEFORE it breaks. Make sure the pet's collar fits properly so they can't back
out of it when it gets to the end of its run.
Have your pet's name,
including owner information and phone number securely attached to or embroidered
into your pet's collar. It is often difficult to get close enough to a pet to
get to see or read this.

LOST PET
Alert Report Form
Pet Peeves-
We took this on ourselves so we really can't
complain to much. If it get's annoying enough we can just stop.
But, if you'd let us vent maybe your
consideration can make up for other
peoples short supply of this essential ingredient for a stress free life.
Pet Peeve # 1-
If your pet is found PLEASE tell us. We
just tried to help you find them and offered to put up money out of our own
pocket to help you do that and we don't even know you ! It doesn't have to
be anything complex just a quick e-mail to found@lostpetalert.com
to tell us they are back and which pet it was that you found.
That would be very nice and very much
appreciated so we can take your lost pet information down and focus more on
helping others who are still lost.
Thank you in advance for your
courtesy on this point.
Pet Peeve # 2-
If your pet is lost it is up to YOU to
find them. We will only try to help. We have even on occasion gotten in our car
and searched the area of your report to help try and locate them.
YOU have to follow up. You have to
contact the various animal shelters. YOU have to check with the highway
departments and veterinary offices. YOU have to post notes and posters in the
area with your pets picture. We try to help but treat us as only another
searcher. YOU have to keep looking and calling on your own.
Pet Peeve # 3-
Generally in most of our coverage and service area your pet is required to be
leashed or chained. You should periodically check that leash or chain to make
sure it is not kinked, frayed or weakened.
For those of you who let your pets run loose our concern then shifts to them as
the pet rather then you as the owner. We once saw a beautiful German Shephard
puppy almost run down twice on a major highway in Vails Gate. We were able to
get the dog to come near us and read his collar tags.
The dog was beautiful. The owner was a beauty too. The tags were from New
Jersey. They had moved up and never bothered to get new ones so that they could
be found and reunited with their pet. We routinely notified the Police
Department but the owner either didn't know or didn't care that their pet had
gotten loose and had not reported it.
Animals are animals and don't always know any better. Their owners really
shouldn't be able to use that excuse.
Pet Escape- Things to do
There is an element of preparation here. It
will happen sooner or later. Be prepared. Here are some things that we have
done. Preparation-Dog & Cat Escape
1) Have a favorite toy near the door. (A squeaky or noisy one is better)
2) Have a favorite snack (Bone or treat ,box of food) 3)
Have an extra Leash or two for the other searchers.
4) A means of communication. (Cell Phone, FRS Radios, Walkie Talkies, Pager, CB
Radio) 5) At Night (Spotlights and Strong
Flashlights) 6) a Pad & a Pen or Pencil or
use our Lost Pet Alert Cards (c)(tm) FIRST
STEPS-Immediately after escape 1)
Loudly call your pets name. Call do not yell. Your tone of voice is very
important.
2) Use the Favorite toy to make noise & call.
3) Be aware of your surroundings. If your pet could be across the highway be
careful WHEN you call their name and try to have one searcher on each side of
the road so the pet does not run across in front of a car.
4) Put food, water and a snack out by the door while you search. This way if the
pet comes back they will focus on the food and water and calm down rather then
continuing the chase. 5) Think where they are
likely to go and why they got loose. (Woods, rabbit, dear, another dog or cat ?
) 6) Follow that idea first. Neighbors
Cat-Neighbors house & tree, rabbit or deer-the woods, another dog in the
neighborhood visit often and decorate your yard-that dog's yard. Your pet,
particularly your dog, has an agenda. While they may be leashed or tied they
know where the other dogs in the neighborhood live from their barking. Once they
get loose they will be visiting.
SECOND STEPS-It's been a while now.
Okay we have searched close by and the obvious
in the first 5 to 10 minutes now it will get more creative. Your pet is
obviously out of hearing range or smiling.
Before getting in your car to go to
phase two you need a plan and some support staff.
1) Realize your pet may be some distance away already.
2) They, unlike you, are actually enjoying this burst of wild
animal freedom.
3) Once that initial surge of enthusiasm passes your pet will
most likely be trying to get home to food, water and celebration. (You know
the "Hey ! Missed me huh ? Thing followed by Pet Me ! Pet Me ! ")
4) Someone should stay by the house and keep calling the pets name.
Loudly, but without yelling. Again, watch your tone of voice and what precedes
and follows the pet's name. If your wife/husband/boyfriend/girlfriend talked to you like that would
you be rushing in from the garage ? Hopefully, the food, water and toy you've
left by the door will get their attention if they happen to swing through while
you are around the other side searching.
5) If you drive through the neighborhood you should do it very slowly,
watching for other traffic. Again the last thing you want is to have your pet
run to their owners voice in front of your car or another vehicle. (We had it
almost happen and still cringe at the thought.) Keep calling
their name and pausing to listen. Remember they can't yell back and probably
won't bark back at you but the neighbors dogs may bark as they go through their
yards. You might hear the commotion.
6) Also remember, you are driving and by this point they are
probably tired. Give them a chance to get to you as you expand your search loop
ever outward, slowly.
7) Look for woods and heavy brush where your pet could have gotten
their leash or chain caught. They may be stuck and again can't tell you.
"Wag ! wag !" in response to your calling their name and seemingly
imminent rescue just doesn't do it. 8) And here's a delicate
subject. Suppose there is a wooded area where your pet can be trapped ? Try to
check with the property owner. Again your pad comes in handy as a courtesy note
if they are not home along with an apology and description of your dog.
Trespassing though is still trespassing. "Broke Free" is an important
ingredient of your message since many property owners do not have a welcome
tolerance for other people's animals wandering on their property. This problem
is worse in areas where irresponsible pet owners regularly allow their animals
to run loose on neighboring properties. Your furry family member may be
perceived as just another juvenile delinquent canine nuisance. "Broke
Free" tells them you are a responsible pet owner and this is an unusual
occurrence.
9) Look particularly for other pet owners. They are much more
likely to understand and to actively help you search or make suggestions. Give
them a piece of paper from your pad with your name, phone number and the pet's
description. Ask them to tell their neighbors about the pet and call if they
have seen anything at all.
10) Look for people jogging or working in their yard. Since they are
out and about they are very likely to see your pet traverse their area. To these
people you should mention the term reward. They are busy doing something else.
This just might make the difference between how much they help you. Give them a
piece of paper from your pad with the same information you gave the other pet
owners. 11) Look for kids playing outside. Tell them your pet got
loose and give them a piece of paper from your pad with the same information you
gave the others. You may want to mention the reward. Kids have little to do with
their time. You just might get them to go on a mission. Plus they can network
with other kids to form search teams and split the reward money. LATER
STEPS-It's Been Several Hours-Days Okay,
a couple of hours have gone by now without a sign. Your pet may be tangled up
and unable to get back or may have continued to chase a deer or rabbit well out
of range and now may be unsure exactly how to get home. What Now ?
This is a good time to take a break. Call the local Police Departments in your
area if you haven't done so already. Sometimes the Highway & Animal Control
departments go through a separate dispatcher. Call them too. Many times you may
have a sheriffs patrol or State Police patrol in your area. They are unlikely to
help you but call them just in case somebody finds your pet and calls them
instead of your local police. Make a
poster of your pets description. Remember collars often come off in the initial
flight so put that in but be sure to discuss the pets coloring and size in
detail. A picture is even better. Put the
poster up in deli's, stores and neighborhood watering holes where the community
visits or gathers. Telephone polls and street signs may be used depending upon
local ordinances. Start calling local
Veterinarians and animal shelters. Make sure each one of them gets a poster and
description. You don't want the pet being brought there and you not knowing
about it for a week or two. That could be tragic.
Sometimes local radio stations will have a lost and found show. Even if they
don't many live DJ's (a rarity nowadays) will still put an announcement on as a
public service particularly on smaller local stations.
Try visiting local senior citizen groups. Many of them are very particular about
what dogs are running through their flowers and decorating their yard. They will
be glad to help if you help them help you. Bring your posters.
Contact the local schools and churches. Ask them to make an announcement and to
include it in their daily weekly bulletins. Boy Scout, Cub Scout &
Girl Scout troops might help you.
Contact LostPetAlert.Com with your information we will post it. Soon we plan to
be able to help you with your posters and your notifications also.
Lastly repeat all of the steps above and keep repeating them.
Good Luck & God Bless. Family always should get to come home.

Did you know....?
New York State
Law requires that your pet be licensed and wearing his or her identification tag
on their collar. Wearing that tag increases the chances that your pet will be
found and that you will be advised of what happened to them after they escaped.
NY has a master database of license numbers that can be searched.
Lost Pets without such a
license tag can subject the owner to fines and possible arrest. In addition your
pet is LESS LIKELY TO BE HELD by a shelter for any extended period of time.
New York State Law
provides that a shelter may euthanize (That MEANS KILL) your pet within 5 days
of when it is picked up if it is not claimed. As cruel as it sounds to snuff out
the life of your beloved family member pets in New York State are viewed as
simple property and not very valuable property at that. The shelters many times
HAVE little choice since overcrowding makes it impossible to store all the
homeless pets that many of them receive. See the Story of Death Row Pets above.
NEUTER your pet. Save a
life. Volunteer your time and your kids time to help at a local shelter. More
then that remember your local shelters when you have a few extra bucks in your
pocket. When things get tough YOU go find a part time job. When things get tough
for Pets they go on the streets and they die. They can't help it. Most Love
people and would do anything for someone if someone would just let them in their
life.
Lost Pet Alert recognizes
that we are all one neighborhood, we are all one community and we must all help
in some small way. We are experimenting with concepts like Joint Pet Custody for
single professionals so Pets can be jointly and responsibly adopted AND SHARED.
You gain a loving furry friend and it prepares you for marriage and divorce... Where
ever did we come up with this concept. :) AND your consenting sharing partner is
glad you are sharing custody and doesn't hate your guts ! What a nice change for
you guys and gals out there... <Grin>
We are working on
smart low tech and high tech solutions to help recover your pet. The cheapest
best thing you can do is a collar and an identifying tag that is obvious and
easy to read. It doesn't have to be gold and engraved. It just has to be
readable and rugged. Next best is our FREE Lost Pet Alert Cards (c). Get them in
advance. How could you not...they are FREE... Better then posters..Look at our
Lost Pet Alert Photo ID Cards..! (c) They cost but they are good.... !
We would like
you to help others with your ideas and simply with the fact that you care. It IS
like losing family and many non-pet owners don't understand that, but you do.
Weigh in give your support. Talk to others about it and YOUR ideas on HudsonValleyNeighbors.Com that's what it's there for....AND it too is FREE....
Criticisms-
We have seen criticism by people that say that posting your Lost Pet on the
Internet is a waste of time. It's not, BUT it can be. You need to be out THERE
looking not inside browsing. We don't just post. We give you suggestions that
may help you based upon our experiences and work 1 on 1 with the pet owner with
followon tips, suggestions and possible sightings.
We are a regional site covering the entire Hudson Valley. There are others. We
are in the process of connecting our front end newsletter format to a high
powered database that you can instantly post to and see lost pet photos in real
time. What you don't realize though is this isn't about processing data....it's
about helping people. We don't just post stories and photos we give people
localized person to person suggestions for their particular circumstances to
help them. We give them our concern, our caring and our ideas. Several times
that is what has worked not the fact that we are a large established free lost
pet reporting service on the Internet. We leave pets posted UNTIL they are
RECOVERED when possible. WE DOUBLECHECK WITH THE OWNERS. These pets are STILL
missing.
For Lost Cats in Westchester we suggest that you give a look to ForgottenFelines
at
http://www.homestead.com/ForgottenFelines: an EXCEPTIONALLY cute site.
Thanks Ann.
What You Can Do To Help
First, Thanks for stopping
by. It makes our considerable investment of time and effort seem worthwhile.
That's helped us. Thanks.
Second, Take a good look
at our lost pet prevention tips. They may save you from the heartache and
aggravation that can often come from YOUR pet getting loose in a strange new
world populated by people, other animals and CARS. Lots of Cars.
Third, Donate generously to your local
animal care center or shelter. You can support them with cash or with things you
don't need or want that can be sold at Thrift Sales. You can donate your time.
Better yet give your kids a chance to make a difference in some pet's life, have
them donate some of their time and energy to helping at a local shelter or
animal center. You'll help them grow to be caring and responsible. Before you
spend $ 800 from some breeder go see the animals that are about to be killed in
your local shelters...Many ARE NICE pets and some are even purebreds. Most have
manners. Some thanks to Animal Sanctuary trainers here in the Hudson Valley who
helps get shelter pets a chance at life.
Fourth, September 11th, has made us all a little
more vigilant, a little more aware that we are all part of one big family. Be
aware. Look around. If you notice a new dog, cat or other pet wandering loose
make note of its coloring and markings. If you can get them to come close and it
is safe to do so, say hi to them. See if there is any owner information on the
pet. Call the owner just to let them know. If the owner knows they are out..no
harm done. If it happens with the same pet two
or three times call the Police. You will be doing the pet a favor as well as the
driver going down the street who would feel absolutely terrible when they dart
out in front of their car. Be responsible. Take charge.
